I’ve always wanted to be a storyteller. I went from terrifying my little sisters with ghost stories (yes, I’m a mean, mean person) to school compositions dark enough to unsettle professors. (No, I wasn’t depressed—I just like unleashing emotions).
I especially loved reading sci-fi and fantasy and immersing myself in the new worlds. Returning to reality—“Cheri, take out the garbage!”—could be such a letdown. And I so, so wanted to create those worlds for other people.
But since everyone said, “Be practical,” and “get a job,” I dutifully got my nursing degrees and worked.
And wrote when time permitted.
Not that I didn’t live life to the fullest—perhaps even a little too much. My mother, having married right out of high school, instructed her children to have fun and “play the field.” When I hit thirty, I got a phone call from her ordering me to stop playing the field. Lol So I slowed down, got married. Had children.
And I wrote when time permitted.
I sent in my first book, filled with confidence that an editor would be on the phone the minute she read a few pages.
Riiiight. Rejections are a learning experience…a very painful learning and humbling learning experience.
My next book was a fantasy. Then I wrote a sci-fi. I’ll have you know that plotting stories isn’t for wussies. Creating new worlds is difficult. I read more craft books. Practiced. And wrote another book. And collected rejections.
And then I switched genres and wrote an erotic romance. For fun. For me.
To my shock, a publisher snapped it up, and my first erotic romance, Club Shadowlands, came out the beginning of 2009. I was so excited—and figured that it was a fluke. I mean, really, who buys erotic romance, especially about BDSM?
The publisher grabbed the second book and asked for a third.
When the one-year anniversary of Club Shadowlands rolled around, I had five published books to my credit and was getting emails from readers who loved my books. Who were asking when the next one came out. Who loved that the stories had not only heat, but also emotions and an actual plots.
I’d wanted to be an author for all my life and at that one-year anniversary, I realized that I…was. No one would walk up and say, “No, you’re a fake, not really a writer.” Okay, I still worry about that sometimes.
Even better, I realized that I had created a special place where readers could escape reality and enjoy a different world, since in many ways, BDSM is an alternate universe, as strange as a visit to a new planet. The rules are changed, the dynamics are different, even sounds and scents are strange.
And feelings? Definitely.
Here, as an example, is a snippet from My Liege of Dark Haven. This is Abby’s first time in a BDSM club, and Xavier has just secured her hands behind her back.
Xavier stood in front of her, looking down. Why did he have to be so tall? His warm hands massaged her bare shoulders. “Any strain in your joints?”
He studied her silently.
She shifted her weight, trying not to think about her lack of mobility. If she didn’t move, she wouldn’t know—much like closing her eyes during gory movie scenes.
“Pull on the tape, Abby. How does it feel?”
Her arms jerked involuntarily, and just like that she knew she was restrained. Couldn’t defend herself. That her body was available to the impassive-faced Master. Alternating waves of heat and cold rushed over her as if she stood in front of a rotating fan. She pulled harder, and panic squeezed her throat.
“Easy, pet.” He cupped her chin with one firm hand. His fingers curled around her arm, creating a warm place on her skin. His movements showed how easily he could touch her…yet the contact was comforting. Settling. “Eyes on me.”
Panting, she looked up and into eyes the color of darkness, but the specks of golden brown made them warm, not cold.
“Good girl.” He stroked his thumb along her jawline. “You know you can’t escape, but I’m not going to do anything you won’t enjoy. We’re here in a public place, and you have a safe word that will summon every monitor in the dungeon. Now slow your breathing down before you hyperventilate.”
Oops. His gaze never left hers as she pulled in a measured breath and let it out.
“Better. Another.” His grip on her upper arm was unyielding but not painful. A man’s hand.
Why did his touch seem different from Nathan’s? Why didn’t she get that horrible dread?
“Little fluff, I want you to remember how you’re breathing now. When I tighten a clamp, it will hurt for a few seconds. I want you to inhale through the pain like you did with your fear.”
“Do you get flu shots?”
“Yes.” When his eyebrows pulled together, she added a hasty, “My liege.”
“This is the same level of pain, although people rarely get turned on by vaccinations. Whereas nipple clamps…” A crease appeared and disappeared in his cheek.

The years have flown by, I’ve written more books, but the joy of playing in an alternate world located right here on this planet has never diminished.
And each anniversary still fills me with wonder. Although I struggle and swear and scream my way through each book—you’d think they’d get easier, but nooo—I love every damned minute of the ride.
Authors often say their characters argue with them. Unfortunately, since Cherise Sinclair’s heroes are Doms, she never, ever wins.
A USA Today Bestselling Author, she’s renowned for writing heart-wrenching romances with laugh-out-loud dialogue, devastating Dominants, and absolutely sizzling sex. And did I mention the BDSM? Her awards include a National Leather Award, Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice nomination, and Best Author of the Year from the Goodreads BDSM group.
Fledglings having flown the nest, Cherise, her beloved husband, and one fussy feline are experimenting with apartment living. Suffering from gardening withdrawals, Cherise is filling their tiny, tiny balcony with plants. And more plants.
My eighteenth book, Edge of the Enforcer will be released May 13th, 2014. (And yes, I still hyperventilate with every book release. lol)
